The Android 16 Developer preview is available in Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel Tablet, Pixel Fold, Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 8a, Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel Pro Fold.

Android 16 DP1 is going live now, all the pixel devices starting from the 6 series will get this developer preview version. The developer actions included in the DP1 will be, the exploration of new APIs and behavior changes. This will be followed by the initiation of early app compatibility testing. As per the latest information available, the Developer Preview 2 could arrive in December with an incremental update and additional features. 

The latest developer preview of Android 16 is all about the introduction of new features and useful additions. Android 16 DP1 has brought an enhancement in the display segment of the Pixel 9 series. The new feature will be known as ‘Experimental mode’. The screen will be super warm and yellow, once the users enable this feature. As per the sources available in the interment, this feature is quite similar to Night Light which can be enabled along with Experimental Mode. users can find this feature by following these steps,

Navigate to ‘Settings’ > Click on ‘Display & Touch’ > Colours. Then users can find the option ‘Experimental mode’ along with the Natural and Adaptive display feature. 

A major change in the display experiment was not quite present in an experiment that was conducted in different lighting conditions and environments. The intention of this feature is unknown and Google needs to work on this feature to provide a better version. This feature is exclusively available in Pixel 9 and the other versions of Pixel devices are not compatible with this feature. 

Will ‘Experimental mode’ be a groundbreaking feature in the future?

The feature ‘Experimental mode’ Which is currently available in Android 16 DP1 can become one of the best display features in the Pixel devices. At the moment, the feature hasn’t reached its true potential. It is reasonable since Android 16 is still in its developing phase. Google has to work on the proper implementation of these features, and this can only bring future advancements in the technology. We can only predict a final verdict of this feature when it has reached its final stages of development. We can’t write off the potential of this feature by analyzing it in its early stages, Google will work on this feature and create a better version when it is ready to be released. 

What are the other features in Android 16 Developer Preview 1

Android 16 DP1 brings numerous advanced features for app developers. A new system photo picker is available in the developer preview 1. This can provide a smoother experience and integrated provision to select multiple photos without enabling extra permissions. 

Health Connect is another feature in the Android 16 DP1. Users can manage medical records in FHIR format, but it will require the permission of users. Along with these features, a new notification cooldown feature will be available in the first developer preview of Android 16. This feature will be able to gradually lessen the notification volume from repeated notification sounds.

When will be the official release of Android 16?

The exact date of the Android 16 release is not available at the moment, but it can be expected right after the Beta 4 release. The details regarding the other developer preview and beta releases are available.

The Android 16 Developer Preview 2 can be expected in December 2024 with additional features and incremental updates. The first Android 16 Beta release could be in January 2025. The incremental beta quality release will be the main update at this stage. Android 16 Beta 3 and Beta 4 will be released in March and April 2025 respectively. The final release of Android 16 can be expected once all the Beta versions are released. Also, platform stability is acquired.
