OpenAI’s Text-to-video AI model was named Sora is introduced in February. The AI model is still in its developmental phase. But recently some artists leaked access to the model in protest of not paying the artists who were involved in the early development stage and research and development section. The early access to Sora with a working interface for generating AI videos was leaked on Tuesday. It was against the approach of OpenAI against the artists. The company mediated the issue and shut down the early access given to the artists.
Sora: OpenAI’s new text-to-video AI Model
OpenAI is well known for its artificial intelligence development and creation of advanced AI tools. Sora is one of the most anticipated projects from OpenAI. It is still considered one of the most advanced AI tools that has ever been introduced into the technology arena. The model is still in its developmental stage. OpenAI had to acquire the services of a huge number of artists and enabled early access permission to test the bug issues and areas of improvement.
The artists claim that the company has been treating the artists without offering them enough compensation and rewards as part of the developmental campaign. The artists came up with a protest initiative by leaking access to the model with a working interface. That is designed for generating AI videos. After three hours OpenAI temporarily disabled early access to Sora for all artists and prevented the issue from not getting worse.
Do artists feel betrayed by corporate overlords?
Artists do feel that they have been betrayed and exploited by OpenAI by not giving enough rewards or compensation for their work. The artists expressed their emotions In a letter that addressed the corporate AI overlords. They expressed their dissent by disclosing the artists are not OpenAI’s unpaid research and development team. They expressed their frustration like this,
“We are not your: free bug testers, PR puppets, training data, or validation tokens”
The artists claim that they were being lured into ‘art washing’ to tell the world that OpenAI’s newly designed Text-to-video AI model, Sora is a beneficial tool for artists across the globe. Artists who were involved in the alpha testing of OpenAI’s Sora claim that they are not against the use of AI technology in the arts. They are welcoming the integration of technology into the art. They only disagree with OpenAI’s policy and attitudes towards the artists who used to work tirelessly for the development of Sora.
In the letter which was posted on Hugging Face, a prominent machine learning and data science platform that is exclusively designed to build, and train artificial intelligence models. The artists strongly confronted the corporate tycoons for not being artist-friendly in the development stage of Sora. According to the letter,
We are releasing this tool to give everyone an opportunity to experiment with what ~300 artists were offered: free and unlimited access to this tool. We are sharing this with the world in the hopes that OpenAI becomes more open, more artist-friendly, and supports the arts beyond PR stunts.
OpenAI’s Response regarding this issue
OpenAI immediately responded to this issue and temporarily shut down the early access provided to the artists. It has not confirmed whether the alleged leak was authentic or not and there were no other explanations from the company regarding the recent leak and the protest of artists. OpenAI stresses the research preview details. They claim that participation in the research program was voluntary. The company has no obligation to provide any feedback or the provision for the use of the tool.
The company responded that hundreds of artists were involved in the alpha stage of Sora’s development and they were helped in prioritizing new features and safeguards. Nico Felix, who is the spokesperson of OpenAI expressed that, they are excited to offer those artists free access and would continue supporting them through grants and other programs.
The potential release of OpenAI’s text-to-video AI model Sora
Sora is one of the most promising concepts of OpenAI and it can become one of the most revolutionary inventions in the technology, the potential release of Sora is not available right now but we can expect the fully-fledged version of Sora once all these issues are solved and appropriate solutions are implemented. The release date is not officially available, the project is still in its early stages and we will be able to enjoy Sora when it is ready to be used.
