Grok is an artificial intelligence chatbot developed by xAI. This was an initiative by Elon Musk and was launched in 2023. The most interesting part of Grok, apart from it being used as a bot for other purposes is that it explains memes for you.
This AI analyses the picture and words in the image and gives a description that goes along with it. It gave accurate results for many trending memes but users are yet to discover more of this as it can only be accessed on X and it requires a Premium+ membership to get access to this bot. This subscription is also not cheap as it costs over $16 a month. It will even cost up to $22 if you sign up through the app.
Apart from explaining memes, this chatbot also creates them for you and also allows the user to select the image they want. Grok also shows off a new feature called RealWorldQA which shows how well a model can describe a real-world image, including the space between objects. Elon Musk explains by stating this feature to explain how Grok is better than its other rivals like ChatGPT, Gemini, and other chatbots.
Musk launched this chatbot by explaining a meme that involved images of military people killing their rivals and a dialogue between the soldiers about the physicists and talking about Isaac Newton. The meme was explained by Grok in detail stating its humor, significance, additional layers to this meme, twist, and how the scene works.
Although it gave a close to accurate result, one section had a small mistake cause the bot mistook the meme about Physicits as Issac Newton. This opportunity was used by spectators to prove that no matter what new technology advances. Artificial Intelligence has yet to improve in understanding feelings like humor along with other complex human traits.
This does not mean that AI itself is bad, as a whole but it means that it has more improvements to make. Technology can be used to train these chatbots and AI to understand humor and other emotions that solely cannot be expressed by AI words.
Although we are not sure how companies will be able to teach AI about these, we are positive that there will eventually come, some technology that will be able to do so. Even Musk explained in his post on X that this version of Grok is just the early version and will rapidly improve; this gives us the light that Musk is on the right track. So, this could be considered a healthy dose of skepticism by AI.
Many other haters of Musk were quick to criticize this bot by comparing it with his coming inventions commenting how the future inventions will also have one mistake or the other and how it will affect the world. However, I’d say it’s too quick to judge a person’s future inventions considering the amount of change Musk has brought in the history of the internet so far, that too in just a few years. The best of his invention is indeed yet to come, I believe.
