Google Has Open-Sourced Its Watermarking Tool

Google is renowned for the implementation of advanced technology and services in the tech sphere. It also contributes a lot to the wellness of the community and makes the place even better in some ways. According to the latest news in the technology world, Google is on the verge of making its watermarking tool available to the public. It allows the developers and businesses the provision to use this service free of cost, it is meant to be a helping hand given to them for identifying their AI-generated content.

Google DeepMind announced this on Wednesday via their X account. they are on the verge of open-sourcing their exclusively designed SynthID, a text watermarking tool through an updated Responsible Generative AI Toolkit.

What is SynthID and how does it work?

SynthID And Its Working

SynthID is a technology service introduced by Google DeepMind that can identify AI-generated content and watermark it by planting digital watermarks directly into AI-generated images, text, video, and audio.SynthID can provide two major functions, one is identifying whether the content is created or generated using Google’s Artificial intelligence tools.

SynthID can scan almost every type of media file including audio, images, texts, video, etc for digital watermarks. These findings can be helpful to the developers and users to determine the genuinity and uniqueness of the content. Watermarking and validating the digital content is the next role of SynthID.

It can embed digital watermarks into Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven content. It will help the developers to identify the content’s authenticity and originality. Since SynthID is free and generally available to use, developers and businesses can download it from Google’s updated Responsible GenAI Toolkit and an AI platform named Hugging Face.

How does it help the developers and users?

AI developers will be highly pleased after this initiative from Google, they will be able to use SynthID to help them detect the outputs of the text. They can detect the origin of the content and check whether the content is from their large language models(LLM) or unique. This can equip the developers with the ability to create AI tools more responsibly. Apart from the technological aftereffects, there are social factors too which can be highly influenced by AI-generated content

Newly developed LLMs are used to disseminate political post-truths and other sensitive content. It will create huge social conflicts and problematic scenarios. That is why advanced countries consider AI watermarking must be a mandatory process in content distribution. A huge amount of misinformation and inaccurate data flow can be prevented by this method.

SynthID uses a comparative analysis of expected probability scores and words in unwatermarked and watermarked text to determine whether the content is AI-originated or not. Google claims that preferring this tool will not alter the quality and creativity of the content. They reached this conclusion after analyzing the performance of SynthID after the watermark was disposed of in the Gemini products.

Currently, SynthID can only identify the content created by Google’s native AI models but we will see a more advanced version of SynthID in the future. Open-source will be a major factor in the development of this tool because the open-source process will increase user engagement and a lot of new developers and businesses will use this service. So the enhancement process becomes inevitable and we can see the most powerful version of SynthID.

SynthID is not a fully-fledged one till now. It has limitations and drawbacks. The watermark was effective in actions like light editing, rewriting, and cropping text, but was less effective in responding to the factual information. 21st-century scams are using artificial intelligence as the main source and component, so a regulation regarding the system needs to be done now or in the future, this initiative from Google will change the current state and create a better and more authentic cyberspace for the users.
