Google has initiated to test of its ability to make digital IDs with US passports now. This was announced back in September and has now officially started its testing period. These digital IDs with US passports can be used at some TSA checkpoints.
To add a passport to your wallet, open the ‘Add to Wallet’ >’ US Passport (beta)’, this option joins the existing ‘Driver’ds. Take a picture of the passport that has your photograph or otherwise, you can enter the details manually. Scan the security chip which is found inside the back cover of the passport.
The steps to complete the procedure are as follows:
- Place the passport on top of a flat surface.
- Open the back cover of the passport.
- Remove the phone case to scan.
- Scan the security chip found on the back side of the passport.
- The last step includes taking a video of your face. Google will be verifying the video to ensure the applicant is a real person and to compare the passport photo to ensure you are the owner of the passport.
Currently, this feature is not made available globally and is presently being tested in beta. Now, this feature will be accessible to users who are enlisted in the Google Play Services beta. To have this feature, either your phone must be running on Android 9 on newer models.
At this moment, the feature is only accessible in the U.S. for domestic flights at selected airports. Your mobile device can employ the NFC to send the info to the reader, and you will be asked to ‘Review the shared info’, with the option to either continue or cancel.
If your mobile device gets lost or stolen, you can remove your ID passport online remotely.
