Huawei Mate XT First Trifold Smartphone

Huawei has launched the world’s first trifold smartphone, the Huawei Mate XT marking a milestone in the history of the mobile industry. The device is equipped with the world’s thinnest battery consisting of a 5600mAh silicon bar. The smartphone, when fully unfolded can be converted to a tablet featuring a 10.2-inch display

The era of folds and flips leaped when Chinese tech giant Huawei unveiled the world’s first trifold smartphone a few hours after the launch of Apple 16 on 12th September in China.

“Huawei has always led the foldable phone industry, This is the world’s first triple-folding phone. We have put immense effort into solving mass production and product reliability issues”

Huawei executive Richard Yu said at the launch event

Huawei has integrated cutting-edge technology and non-Nuetonian fluid mechanisms in its latest launch. The Mate XT ultimate edition features a 10.2-inch foldable display with a 3K resolution OLED screen (with a 92% screen-to-body ratio) which transforms into a 7.9-inch smartphone when partially folded and a 6.4-inch smartphone when fully folded. The display is protected using ultra-thin glass, without compromising the layout of the design.

The phone’s unique design features two hinges, one folding inward and the other folding outward, making a z-shaped fold possible. Even with a trifold mechanism, the device seems slim with a 12.88 mm width when folded, making it one of the thinnest phones available in the market.

The core component used in the design of Mate X ultimate edition is steel, resisting the chance of deformation on continuous opening and closing.

The sophisticated camera features of Mate XT offer a 50 MP primary rear camera, 12 MP ultra-wide angle lens, and 12 MP telephoto lens offering a 5.5x optical zoom. In addition, an 8MP front camera is available within a punch hole cut out, allowing to capture panoramic views of glaciers, mountains, and seas if they seem up close.

The Mate XT is assisted with a 5600 mAh silicon carbon battery, the thinnest battery used in a smartphone, supporting 66-watt wired and 50-watt wireless fast charging.

The smartphone is equipped with a Kirin 9010 5G processor ensuring AI assistance and improved performance.

The AI features include a voice editing function to mold voice-to-text transcriptions,  a translation expert for side-by-side language switching in texts, and photo editing to help extend the background or remove undesired objects from the backdrop. In addition, the device also incorporates satellite communication, offering improved network connectivity in remote areas.

The device includes premium features like a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, for biometric authentication and an IR blaster, all running smoothly within Huawei’s Harmony OS.

The connectivity options include 5G, 4G, Bluetooth 5.2, LTE, WiFi 6, GPS, NFC, and USB 3.1 type-C port. It weighs 298 grams.

Originally designed for a range of audiences, the device has already earned interest from over three million potential customers before the launch. According to the current trends and updates from the company, the global release has not been confirmed and the device will only be now available in China.

The Mate XT’s price is high as expected. The Mate XT is available in different configurations starting at 1999 Yuan ($2809) for the 16 GB RAM/256 GB storage variant and ranging up to  23999 Yuan ($3371) for a 1TB model.

The package includes Freebuds 5 earbuds, a 66W charger, an 88W car charger, and a kickstand case. In addition, a foldable split keyboard is also provided if required.

The foldable phone is available in Dark Black and Rui Red colors and has been for sale in China since September 20.
