Chip rivals Intel and AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) join hands to form the X86 Ecosystem Advisory group to prevent the encroachment of Arm in X86 territory. The advisory group aims to enhance the interoperability and development of the X86 system. The announcement, made in Santa Clara, California on 15 October marks a new era of X86 Architecture, a leading face in modern computing over more than 40 years.
Two major US tech giants, Intel and AMD announced a partnership that involves the formation of the X86 Advisory Group, aiming for the expansion of X86 architecture including software simplification and interoperability.
The other members of the advisory group include Google, Broadcom, Dell, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, HP Inc., Lenovo, Meta, Microsoft, Oracle, and Red Hat. The sudden move emphasizes meeting the rapidly evolving demands of artificial intelligence, custom chipsets, advanced architecture, and 3D packaging.
X86 has been the pillar of modern computing, retaining its position as one of the preferred architectures in data centers and personal computers for over forty years. In the press meeting held on Tuesday, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger said that X86 is focusing on new levels of customization, scalability, and compatibility to meet customer needs. Lisa Su, AMD’s CEO opens up her hopes, saying that the X86 advisory group will pave the way for future enhancement in chip architecture and X86 will flourish to peak in the coming decade.
A report from Reuters states that the collaboration mainly aims to face the challenges raised by Arm Holdings, which are exploited by tech tycoons including Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and Qualcomm. Even though the surge of Arm was not mentioned in the press meeting, it’s obvious that the growth of Arm is considered a threat to both Intel and ADM. The replacement of X86 chips with Arm by Apple was considered a big backstab.
The main advantage of Arm is that it can run on every software without the need for adjustments whereas Intel and AMD use the same X86 technology in their chips, the software requires to make essential adjustments to function properly in different environments.
Considering the issue, the X86 Advisory Group aims to identify ways to expand the features of the X86 ecosystem to support cross-platform compatibility. The group integrating with hardware and software companies imparts various features and functions in their chips to make them compatible across different operating systems.
Driving innovation across sectors including cloud, artificial intelligence, and edge computing are among their priorities. ‘Our system is robust and growing with opportunities that AI will present’ said Gelsinger at the press meet held on October 15, 2024.
The X86 architecture has laid a strong foundation in the development of modern computing. The formation of the advisory group comprising leading tech tycoons including AMD and Intel paves the path for a fruitful era of X86 architecture.
This collaboration aims at simplified development, technological advancement in cloud computing, artificial intelligence, innovations, and many more. With the growing technologies and increased complexity in these firms, collaboration like these opens the way for performance and user satisfaction.
