Additionally, it also boasts up to 16 next-gen efficient cores (E-cores). Altogether, the CPU can offer 14% more performance in multi-threaded workloads than previous generations. It is also important to note that the Core Ultra 200S is the first NPU-enabled desktop processor for enthusiasts. It comes with a built-in X GPU with state-of-the-art media support.

Intel Core Ultra 200S Series: AI Performance

Intel launched the new enthusiast line of CPUs, the Ultra 200S series, and claimed that it offers better performance for most creator and AI tasks. The developers have added an NPU (neural processing unit) to the Ultra 9 285K CPU, which can mimic the human brain’s neural network and accelerate AI and machine learning tasks. 

However, it is important to note that the processor is only capable of 13 TOPS (trillions of operations per second). This means that it does not qualify for Microsoft Copilot Plus features that require at least 40 TOPS. Still, Intel is optimistic that as the research and development advances, the developers will be able to utilize the NPUs to release some workloads of AI and even gaming. 

According to reports, Intel was aware of these shortcomings in TOPS, and they could’ve easily improved it. However, improving the NPU and TOPs may come with other sacrifices in fundamental performances such as reducing core count or shrinking the size of the core.

Intel would refrain from doing this, because well, even though there is a lot of hype around the AI capabilities and its daily usage, many computer enthusiasts are still apprehensive about its long-term appeal than being just a party trick. You may find some in-device AI features such as text detection translation, image upscale, and AI-powered generative fill. However, would you need it daily on an enthusiast PC?

Intel Core Ultra 200S Series: New Motherboards

The new Intel Core Ultra 200S series, also called the Arrow Lake processors has a custom form factor, meaning that it wouldn’t fit in your old motherboards. So, to upgrade your PC, you need to replace the entire motherboard. The new Z890 board is used for the Arrow Lake processors.

They support up to 24 PCIe 4.0 lanes, to support the most number of components, they can support up to 8x SATA 3.0, and up to 32 USB 3.2 ports, which are other reasons for updating your board. The board also supports 48 PCIe lanes in total, 20 of these being Gen 5 from the CPU.

Additionally, the CPU has integrated Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.3, and 2X Thunderbolt 4. Meanwhile, the motherboard makers are given the option for adding Wifi 7, up to 4x Thunderbolt 5 ports, 2.5GbE, and Bluetooth 5.4, making the motherboard provide a better all-around performance and speed. 

Intel Core Ultra 200S Series: Should You Upgrade Now? 

If you are a gamer, you already must have a good gaming setup that you have become comfortable with. If you decide to upgrade with the Aroow Lake processors, you are not just popping off the processor and inserting the new one, but you are replacing the entire motherboard, which can come with several additional complexities in fitting your added components.

Same if you are a content creator. Additionally, it does not seem like the incentive you are getting out of the upgrade is that noticeable. So, for the time it is better to wait and see. However, if you are building a new PC from scratch, then you can go for this new series of processors.
