iOS 18.1 Release Date: When is Apple Intelligence Coming Out and How to Use It?

iOS 18.1 release date

The long anticipated wait is going to end soon. Apple will launch its AI system, Apple Intelligence, on October 28. The new AI feature allows users to send improvised emails, receive notification summaries, remove unwanted objects from the images, and much more.

Apple to launch Apple Intelligence with the newer operating system iOS 18.1 on October 28.

The company has already released the RC (release candidate) version for iOS developers and public beta participants. The new update will allow users to enhance their email writing, receive notification summaries, and remove unwanted images from the background with AI-powered tools.

The recently released iPhone 16 models were anticipated to bring Apple Intelligence, but seems the company was not ready by then. Along with the Apple Intelligence, the new version appears to bring firmware updates to Airpod 2, unlocking new hearing health features.

However, the new features will not be automatically activated on the device once an update is completed, a user has to activate them manually. Apple has also revealed a beta of the iOS 18.1 developer version with more AI features previewed at the WWDC 2024 event.

What does Apple Intelligence have in store?

Apple Intelligence

Apple Intelligence is dispersed around the phone. It can be accessed in emails, notes, photos, and notification summaries.

Writing tools

Apple Intelligence can be used in writing tools, allowing users to edit notes, rewrite emails, proofread, format, and more. Just highlight the text you want information on and select ‘writing tools’ from the popup list, and you are ready to edit with the available options.

Photos

Apple’s new Photo app allows users to create themed photos and videos with music by simply typing a small description you want. Apple Music subscription is required to access the track, else a generic tune will be opted for by AI.

Siri

Apart from a new colorful activation animation, there are no big updates with Siri.

Call recordings and transcripts

The new Apple Intelligence feature allows users to record phone calls and transcribe them automatically to the Note app. A waveform icon appearing on the screen while calling can be tapped to activate recording. AI will then give an option to transcribe the call on Notes.

Notification summaries

Emails come with AI-generated summaries by default. The ‘summarise’ option in the mail app allows a quick preview of the content. AI also offers a reply email with responses available at the top of the keyboard along with the Apple Intelligence icon.

How to activate Apple Intelligence?

Once your iPhone is updated with iOS 18.1 go to Settings, followed by Apple Intelligence and Siri, to join the waitlist. Once you tap on ‘Apple Intelligence and Siri’, you will be given the option to sign up for a waitlist to gain access to new AI features.

How long a user has to stay on the waitlist is determined by the demand for the feature. To install the feature one needs to join the Apple Beta software program. Apple Intelligence may probably require a 4 GB storage space and may extend beyond the broader iOS 18.1.

Devices supporting Apple Intelligence

Apple Intelligence won’t be accessible in every iPhone model. Only the latest and priciest Apple devices support Apple Intelligence since it requires high hardware and memory capability to run the AI.

The list of phones supporting Apple Intelligence includes the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro Max, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max. The yet-to-release Apple’s cheapest iPhone variant, the iPhone SE 4 is also likely to feature Apple Intelligence (not confirmed by the company yet).
