OpenAI launches ChatGPT app for Windows

ChatGPT has broadened its scope by launching a desktop version exclusively for Windows. This is a beta version and is in its early experimental stage as it is still under development. Many improved privacy settings, user interface, and accessibility have been introduced for desktop usage rather than website browsing.

ChatGPT exclusively for MacOS users was launched previously this year in June. The latest announcement made by OpenAI on October 17th is that they have officially launched ChatGPT exclusively for Windows. The generative AIs’ scope and accessibility are getting broadened by incorporating with the most popular software. This new application is made to specially suit desktop usage and can be termed as an official ChatCPT desktop application.

This generative AI has gained wide usage and popularity in recent years as a chatbot from OpenAI. It can be accessed from the official website or through the app which can be downloaded on both Android and iOS. From April 1 2024 onwards, ChatGPT stopped requiring login, but is better to log in with email or Google to access chat history and the advanced version GPT-4o.

ChatGPT has significantly improved from its initial launch in 2022 with new versions like GPT-4o and GPT-4o mini, and a subscription to unlock more features. Its evergrowing usage and popularity now have opened doors to collaborate with other top-tier tech companies.

The popularity of ChatGPT can be traced to its faster responsiveness, frequent updations, and versatility that suits different requirements. The desktop application can be used to chat about files and photos with an improved user interface. It can also be used to summarize documents and generate images.

The new interface is designed for easy navigation and to enable the features effectively. It can also minimize distractions and clear unnecessary clutter. This can be beneficial for work and study. The idea might have arisen from the swift need for an AI tool without relying on a web browser.

The Windows version of ChatGPT can be minimized to a small tab and used with other applications as you work. The feature enables a smooth conversation and best suits the official purposes without breaking the workflow. This functionality was previously introduced in the MacOS version of ChatGPT.

The officials stated that they have brought newer improvements from OpenAI, including the newest and smartest model OpenAI o1. OpenAI o1 can be accessed in a preview mode and is said to be capable of reasoning. The app is compatible with most Windows 10 devices. DALL-E 3 of OpenAI is also accessible and can be used to generate images.

ChatGPT Windows app also incorporates features that suit Windows users like offline interaction, memory management, and system-level integration.

Compared to the usual ChatGPT, the Windows versions lack a few functions like voice functionality and the advanced voice mode. The officials have also stated that they will be working on improving the features as the app is in its early version.

They have added a shortcut, Alt + Space for easy accessibility. Uploading files and photos which are already on the device is an added feature. The conversational method of ChatGPT along with these functions on Windows was a much-needed improvement.

The Mac version launched a few months before already reported some security flaws in user privacy as the conversations were stored in plain text. The new Windows version stores data in an encrypted format and provides improved security eradicating its mistakes.

The app can be downloaded from the Microsoft Store and is now open for paid users only and for subscribers on ChatGPT Plus, Team, Edu, and Enterprise.
