The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) recently announced that South Korea is all set to expand its private cloud computing industry to strengthen its position in the fast-growing AI era. The science ministry has found the growing need to increase competitiveness in the AI-ruling era and has decided to enhance local companies by collaborating with global entities to foster effective strategies for achieving the crown of the global AI leader.
Considering the surveys and studies conducted, South Korea has invested significantly in strengthening AI technologies in recent years. South Korea ranks the third position in the world with the number of AI patents filed between the year 2010 and 2022.
Yet reports show that their cloud technologies remain outdated and underdeveloped which makes them stand behind the global leaders. This issue has become a concerning factor for the country and especially The Ministry of Science which is committed to making South Korea one of the major powerhouse of AI technologies.
According to the inner sources, the government has planned an effective strategy to implement the measures and adopt fresh private cloud systems across multiple fields ranging from education and finance to other private sectors. The initiative to ease the network separation regulations and increase the taxes for the benefit of AI and cloud companies has also been taken by the government.
The South Korean government and the Ministry of Science have joined hands to put in more research towards the development of the AI landscape and to be able to compete with global AI technologies and foster the economic and industrial growth of the country. As a part of this initiative, they are also planning the development of an AI chip with a capacity of 1 Exaflop meaning the AI chip can work super fast with millions of operations per second. The invention of such a chip would further enhance the capabilities of AI technologies.
To further support the AI strategy, the South Korean government has opened an AI safety research institute under the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute for the proper research and accurate development of AI technologies.
According to the Ministry of Science, the institute is situated in the country’s capital and aims to provide mega labs with up to 35 petaFLOPS processing capabilities which would also require heavy funding. It said that such an innovative lab offers support to over 630 AI scholars and more than 200 researchers participated in various AI projects sponsored by the state.
The transition to a private cloud system has already begun and the South Korean government will be investing around 45 billion along with the private sector who are encouraged to contribute to the cause.
With this new movement, South Korea is all set to become the global leader in the AI network. The competition has risen due to the rapid transformation of the world into an AI-generated landscape. Critics consider that South Korea has adopted such a movement to compete with the countries leading in AI technologies like the United States and China.
The government has already put its foot down and taken a national strategy towards achieving the goal from a few years back. Reports show that the country has invested heavily and put in huge efforts to achieve the goal of a trustworthy AI that will be unique from the existing AI technologies.
The government has realized that an effective Artificial Intelligence network will pave the way toward building economic power as well. A collective contribution can be witnessed from the country towards becoming the most powerful AI network and this event might even mark a milestone in the history of South Korea.
