WhatsApp New Feature Contact Storage Directly Within The App

WhatsApp is a daily part of our lives now, it has grown beyond an instant messaging app and people are using it for various purposes. WhatsApp has brought innumerable features and services after it was taken over by the tech tycoon Meta. WhatsApp has recently brought a new feature that enables users to store their contacts directly in the app itself.

The in-app storage system feature will offer a more secure and easier way to manage the contacts. This is an innovative initiative from WhatsApp. It will be a huge relief to those who are using multiple devices and the same WhatsApp account for their job and other activities.

Users can have access to their in-app contact storage from multiple devices. It is made possible through the WhatsApp cloud storage system. The in-app saved contacts are stored in WhatsApp’s cloud storage system. Now users will not have to worry about the device switch and loss of their smartphones.

WhatsApp in-app storage: What has changed?

WhatsApp In App Storage Features

In the previous versions of WhatsApp, it had to take contact information from the device’s default contacts app, now with the integration of an in-app storage system, WhatsApp has an independent contact management system. It will be useful for people who are continuously using WhatsApp web and WhatsApp desktop-like extended versions of WhatsApp.

Enhanced flexibility for the users is the primary outcome of this feature. It will ease the cross-device activities of users with provision for using the same WhatsApp account without affecting the contact information. An option to sync WhatsApp contacts back to the phone’s address book. Whatsapp has introduced a new encrypted storage system named Identity Proof Linked Storage(IPLS) for advanced contact management.

This is the technology that enables the users to create contacts within WhatsApp and sync them exclusively for WhatsApp. The stored contacts will be encrypted within the application and protected using Identity Proof Linked Storage. To conduct the third-party audits of IPLS’s cryptographic security, WhatsApp has paired with Cloudflare. This will protect the contact data securely and manage the exposure to unaccredited activities.

The newly integrated technology will provide a unique option in the future. According to the company resources, the underlying technology used in this system will be responsible for the provision of saving the contacts by username in the future. It will enhance the privacy of each individual, by enabling this feature people do not need to share their contact number with someone to acquire the service of WhatsApp.

What will be the benefits of this feature?

  • This feature will be highly beneficial for people who want to separate personal and business contacts when they are using various WhatsApp accounts on their smartphones.
  • In-app stored contact details will never be removed until you prompt it to, so people can access their contacts even if the device is lost or damaged.
  • People will be able to manage the contact by using the keyboard on WhatsApp web and Windows. This will make contact management easier and more convenient for the use of individuals.

Meta has been tirelessly working since 2023 to implement this advanced feature in the WhatsApp messaging app, their next anticipated milestone will be adding a username to the app, the same technology used here will most likely pave the path for the next advancement. We can expect this feature soon in the app.

Meta is seriously considering the privacy options and their enhancement. In this feature, they have their alignment with Cloudflare to conduct the audit about the cryptographic security and safety measurements for data management. It is the sole proof of how WhatsApp and Meta are prioritizing the security of the sensitive data of users.
