WordPress is an unavoidable name when it comes to website development. With numerous features, templates, and services, WordPress has made website development a lot easier. Being an open and free source, it has backed a majority of websites within a short time. But, what about WP Engine? Is it a similar source? WP Engine is one of the major hosting providers of WordPress. That means, WP Engine allows WordPress users to host their WordPress site. WordPress and WP Engine have had a symbiotic relationship right from the beginning.
However, what made these two names appear in news and conversations very often these days? What is the ongoing tension between these two companies? It has been a few months since WordPress and WP Engine have had a heated controversy and conflict, resulting in uncertainties among the website owners who rely on WP Engine for their websites. All these controversies started with a blog published by the WordPress project. Let’s dive deeper into this controversy and its ongoing status through this article.
The real tension between WordPress and WP Engine
The series of events between the two companies started with a blog post by WordPress CEO Matt Mullenweg in mid-September, calling WP Engine “cancer to WordPress.” He severely criticized WP Engine’s latest update that disabled the feature that allowed users to track and revise post history. According to him, this was a core feature that promised to protect their users’ data. Also, he added that WP Engine was not contributing sufficiently to the open source project and was confusing the users as WP Engine is a part of WordPress.
The legal battle that followed led to a cease-and-desist letter from WP Engine asking to withdraw WordPress’ comments and the response cease-and-desist letter to WP Engine that they breached WordPress trademark rules. The conflict was taken forward with a ban for WP Engine from WordPress.org on the company’s resources. This ban denied WP Engine access to all the essential tools, updates, and maintenance that are significant to enhance a WordPress site.
The major reasons behind the dispute
Various minor and major concerns led to this open dispute and controversy between WordPress and WP Engine. Some of the major reasons behind this conflict are:
Usage of WordPress trademark
One of the most important allegations against WP Engine was its unauthorized use of the WordPress trademark. One of the major contributors to WordPress, Automattic accused the WP Engine of exploiting WordPress branding for its publicity, confusing users and affecting brand integrity and legal compliance.
WP Engine’s contributions
Mullenweg stated that WP Engine did not contribute to the WordPress open-source project. He said that the financial contributions and resource allocations of WP Engine do not match its contributions to the open-source community. This made him question WP Engine’s commitment to WordPress.
Modification of core features
The most serious issue that led to the beginning of these controversies is the modification of some of the core features of WordPress. The allegations note that WP Engine altered some essential features of WordPress affecting its credibility, compatibility, and security affecting the user experience. Mullenweg commented that these modifications will fragment the WordPress community, leading to potential conflicts.

The current status of the conflict
Although WordPress banned WP Engine from using its services, the ban was temporarily lifted on 27 September 2024. However, this does not mean that the conflict between the two companies is resolved. Days after lifting the ban, on 3 October 2024 WP Engine filed a lawsuit against WordPress, particularly against Automattic and WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg accusing that they exploited their power and extortion.
On 12 October, WordPress took control of one of the WP Engine’s plugins. They cited that the action was held due to the need to remove commercial upsells. They also added that the action was required to address security concerns.
These controversies and conflicts also led to internal disputes in the companies. The dispute over handling the controversies led to internal disputes in Automattic that led to buyouts of employees and staff departures. Later, the same month Automattic and Mullenweg filed a motion to dismiss WP Engine’s lawsuit stating that their claims lacked legal support.
Furthermore, Automattic introduced WP Engine Tracker in early November. This website highlighted the customers leaving the WP Engine and a list of remaining customers. This heated the conflict leading to a preliminary injunction hearing on 26 November. The issue still exists, leaving uncertainties in the minds of websites that rely on WP Engine.
